TREC Public Workshop, December 4, 2000

Portable Folding Wall (two 4' x 5' steel panels hinged together)

Participants create 4" x 12" panels that describe their feelings, beliefs, memories, etc. about racism. As they place their panels on the metal wall, they speak the story of the panel and are witnessed silently. Once all the panels have been placed, participants create a second panel in response. As they discuss the second panel and their own process of creating, remembering and responding, the encounter deepens. The use of images quickly gets past ordinary verbal processes resulting in authentic encounter.

TREC workshops provide participants with a wide variety of media including yarn, raffia, magazine images, pastels, markers, paint, "found objects", fabric, textured paper, and more. This allows for both two and three dimensional responses on a sturdy cardboard or matboard backing. Two heavy-duty craft magnets are glued to the backing to hold the panel on the steel wall.
